A Queer Endeavor is a local initiative housed in the CU-Boulder School of Education and led by Bethy Leonardi, PhD, and Sara Staley, PhD. It is focused on supporting teachers and school communities around topics of gender and sexual diversity. They seek to create school cultures that affirm gender and sexual diversity, move beyond the anti-bullying discourse and work toward systemic change.
In April of 2013, A Queer Endeavor hosted “An Evening with LGBTQ Youth and Allies.” The intention of the evening was to open a conversation among 14 middle, high school, and college students and 75 pre-service and in-service teachers from local school districts. They filmed that event, as well as 30-plus interviews with students, teachers, and LGBTQ community members, and created a documentary film, Breaking the Silence: Honoring the Voices of LGBTQ Youth and Allies in Supporting our Teachers. They also created curricular materials to accompany the documentary. They now regularly use the film to “break the silence” in our community by collaborating with schools of education locally and across the country.
Bethy Leonardi, PhD, and Sara Staley, PhD, both of A Queer Endeavor, will screen the film at our October meeting. Following the screening, they will lead a discussion regarding their use of the film in training educators and administrators within Boulder Valley School District and St. Vrain Valley School District and how they seek to disrupt heteronormativity, heterosexism, homophobia, transphobia, and gendered harassment in educational spaces and beyond.
A confidential support group meets an hour before the program, at 2 p.m.
