Gay Couples Line Up to Marry in Iowa

DES MOINES — County officials across Iowa began accepting marriage license applications from same-sex couples on Monday morning, making it the third state to allow such marriages.

Outside the Polk County government offices here, couples waited in a dreary drizzle for the State Supreme Court ruling allowing the marriages to take effect, then waited in line to submit their applications and $35 license fees. Although marriage licenses in Iowa require a three-day waiting period, some couples sought waivers of the wait from local judges and said they intended to hold ceremonies immediately.
